While our law office is donating $5000 for the drive, the event’s overall importance cannot be overstated.

Ending Hunger and Reducing Food Waste on Long Island
The Island Harvest Food Bank has served Long Island since 1992 when Linda Breitstone founded it. When Linda realized that leftover food from a local convenience store was thrown in the trash, she resolved to change the community. To this day, the food bank’s mission is “to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island.” Island Harvest Food Bank is also a proud partner of Feeding America.
The Island Harvest Food Bank has locations in Bethpage, Hauppauge, Uniondale, and Calverton, NY. The organization hosts a wide range of services and programs for the community.
Island Harvest Food Bank knows that food pantries need as much support as possible. While the food bank has four locations, donors and volunteers can check for open food pantries across Long Island on the Island Harvest website.
The nutrition program offers information to the Long Island community addressing high blood pressure, diabetes, and other chronic disorders. Nutritional services are made affordable through partnerships with hospitals in the area and donations from the community.
Island Harvest Food Bank also offers food raise drives that can be hosted by any organization. When a company or charity wants to give to the food bank, Island Harvest will partner with that group to ensure the donation drive’s success.
The Home Run to End Hunger Virtual Event is typically hosted through Citi Field and the New York Mets. The food bank typically raises around $100,000 for the Emergency Response and Recovery Fund, and anyone who might have missed the baseball season can still donate if they choose.
Donors and volunteers can also research food recalls on the Island Harvest website. Food recalls are listed for all community members’ safety, and SNAP resources are provided so needy families can receive the support they need.
The 12th Annual Bethpage Turkey Drive
The 12th Annual Bethpage Turkey Drive brings the Island Harvest Food Bank’s mission to the Bethpage Federal Credit Union. In the past, the Turkey Drive has been something of a community event that brings people together under the changing colors and falling leaves of autumn.
The Turkey Drive was started to benefit families on Long Island who need it over the holiday season. In keeping with the food bank’s mission, donors can give any food they have to help those who are less fortunate. This is also a good time for business owners to provide food items that will not be used during the holiday season to reduce food waste.
Visit from 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM on Friday, November 20, with donations from food to monetary gifts. As the drive occurs in the branch’s parking lot, keep in mind that traffic might back up onto S. Oyster Bay Rd. Everyone’s patience is appreciated as Island Harvest fulfills its mission.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Turkey Drive has given new instructions to its patrons. When donors arrive at the event, they are asked to remain in their vehicles for everyone’s safety. All donations should be left in the donor’s trunk so that volunteers can maintain minimal contact with all visitors.
At the drive, frozen turkeys, non-perishable goods, and cash or check donations will be accepted by volunteers. Cash and checks can be placed in envelopes marked as donations. Cans in bags, boxes, or crates will be easier for volunteers to handle, as well.

Donors Can Now Give Online to the Turkey Drive
Online giving has been added to the Turkey Drive to reach more donors. Starting in November, the food bank will accept online donations earmarked for any number of services or events. Those in quarantine or feel uncomfortable leaving their homes can give to the food bank online or through their mobile device.
Donors may choose to honor someone special to them, give in memory of a lost loved one, give every month, or give a one-time donation in the spirit of the holidays. Check out social media posts from Island Harvest Food Bank for additional details.

An Appearance by the Thanksgiving Turkey
The Thanksgiving Turkey will make an appearance at the Turkey Drive as he always has. While families are encouraged to stay in their cars, the turkey will visit every vehicle. Families can take selfies from the vehicle, and kids get to see one of their favorite holiday icons. The food bank hopes to visit in-person with families next year who would like pictures with the Turkey.
