Risk Taking Heats Up In The Summer

While on vacation, most American travelers are more likely to spend days taking risks and acting out spontaneously, while many singles will look for a romantic rendezvous on their summer nights, according to a new Finn Futures survey conducted by the travel and lifestyle division of Finn Partners, a New York City-based communications company.

Sixty-one percent of Americans agree that, when on vacation, they make different decisions, take risks, and are more spontaneous compared to everyday life. Meanwhile, 36 percent of single travelers surveyed said they are more likely to make a romantic connection with someone they just met if they are on vacation compared to their normal, day-to-day life. Double the number of men (51 percent) are likely to make that romantic connection on vacation than women (25 percent).

Other key findings of Finn Partners’ 2017 “Confessions of a Modern Traveler” report include:

• The most likely to take risks or act out spontaneously on vacation are Millennials under the age of 30 (78 percent).

• Those most likely to indulge in some summer lovin’ with a romantic connection are between 30 and 44 (46 percent).

For those taking a vacation with their partner, spending vacation time together tends to be good for relationships:

• Of those who are in a committed relationship, more than half (54 percent) said they like their spouse/partner more after the vacation.

Teenage Risk Taking Increases in the Summer

It’s important to keep in mind that teenage risk taking heats up in the summer as well. Studies show that during the summer months adolescents are most likely to experiment with first-time use of alcohol, marijuana and cigarettes. For car crashes, the perennial leading cause of death among teenagers, June, July and August are the three consecutive months with the most adolescent traffic fatalities. Parents offering guidance shouldn’t be dismayed by the teenage eye-roll. Research shows that adults can capitalize on their relationships with teenagers to reduce risk taking. Those who have open lines of communication with their parents are less likely to engage in dangerous behavior. Although we cannot guarantee the safety of any teenager, we can do all in our power to make sure they make healthy choices.
