When Matthew Bligh and Erin Hargis, partners at Rosenberg & Gluck, L.L.P., took a tour of the Island Harvest facility, they were deeply moved by the organization’s passionate mission to feed the disadvantaged people of Long island.
Bligh and Hargis walked the space, learned of the group’s efforts, and sensed firsthand the group’s dedication to its cause. Before they even left the facility, Bligh and Hargis agreed to join forces with the nonprofit organization by donating $5,000 to the Turkey & Trimmings Bethpage Federal Credit Union Turkey Event.
“We empathize with the passion that Island Harvest has for those Long Islanders who do not get to enjoy the same ease of life as others,” Bligh said. “They need our help year-round, but most especially during the holidays—a time when everyone deserves a little extra joy and warmth of human spirit.”
Island Harvest Turkey and Trimmings strives to help 316,000 Long Islanders who struggle to feed, clothe, and shelter their families enjoy a little magic of the season with a warm and festive holiday meal. With its multiple food drives, the organization aims to raise funds to not only feed the underprivileged members of the community but also support the group’s network of food banks and soup kitchens, which serve hot meals year-round.
The annual Bethpage Turkey Drive is the largest single-day frozen turkey and food drive on Long Island. Scheduled for November 22nd from 6 am to 6 pm, the drive will take place at its usual location, the Bethpage Federal Credit Union headquarters at 899 South Oyster Bay Road.
The Bethpage Turkey Drive calls out to the community for frozen turkeys, nonperishable food items, canned goods, shelf-stable milk and juice, and canned meats. Island Harvest will also happily accept cash donations and supermarket gift cards. Businesses who have organized their own food drives are welcome to deliver their collected items to the Bethpage Federal Credit Union.
Bligh and Hargis further committed to involving their law firm staff as volunteers at Island Harvest. Employees will visit the facility on a bi-monthly basis to help out wherever needed.
“There’s something about immersing oneself in a meaningful effort like Island Harvest—not just cutting a check and going back to the daily grind, but actually rolling up your sleeves to help out—that connects a person more deeply with their community,” Hargis explained. “As a law firm that works to represent the injured people of Long Island, we feel especially drawn to this type of service. We can’t wait to get involved as regular volunteers there.”
Island Harvest is Long Island’s largest hunger-relief organization. Its creative approach to feeding the hungry involves tapping local food establishments to donate their surplus food items that otherwise would be discarded at the end of each day.
Since it opened its doors in 1992, the group has delivered 130 million pounds of food to a vast network of organizations that feed the needy, including 570 food pantries and soup kitchens.
