Traumatic brain injury (TBI) — compensation and recovery
Arielle Budnick, an 18-year-old Queens resident has a message for other teens “Wear a helmet.” Budnick was injured in a Memorial Day skateboarding accident, and suffered traumatic brain injury (TBI).
Budnick, now fully recovered after several surgeries and months of physical rehabilitation, wants to spread the message of the importance of helmet safety.
“After this experience I realize the true value of life,” said Budnick. “It pays to wear a helmet, and none of this would have happened if I were wearing a helmet.”
Now a staunch advocate of wearing a helmet, Arielle is sharing her story during gym classes and includes a presentation on helmet safety with a representative from a hospital in Queens.
Arielle was lucky but a lot of people don’t make a full recovery from TBI.
The devastation of traumatic brain injury
A brain injury is one of the most devastating injuries a person can sustain. And a serious brain injury can cause multiple problems from paralysis to motor skill difficulties.
Brain injury is caused by head trauma, such as skull fractures, concussions, or sudden and violent shaking of the head.
This type of injury commonly results from:
• Motor vehicle accidents
• Medical malpractice
• Slip and falls
• Construction accidents
• Sporting accidents
• Gunshot accidents
While some patients make a full recovery, many others do not and face a life time of surgeries, physical therapy, and disabilities.
